Alan Paine Country-Wear– celebrating over 100 years of tradition
In 1907 William Paine founded the first incarnation of this famous brand in Godalming, Surrey and named it Paines of Godalming. He initially taught himself to knit as a hobby, but this soon grew into a successful knitwear business which developed some of the first cable-knit sweaters which were sold to local cricket clubs. By the 1920’s these has become incredibly popular and they began adding club colours to the sweaters. The brands most famous unofficial patron, The Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) ordered his own sweaters with his regimental colours. When George Mallory made his attempt to climb Everest in 1924 he took with him apparel which bore the name ‘W.F. Paine, 72 High Street, Godalming’. By the outbreak of World War Two the company’s reputation has grown so much that they were commissioned to make sweaters for the British Armed Forces, in particular the Royal Navy.
Following the war William’s son Alan took over the business and expanded to America and developed close relationships with major department stores such as Macy’s and Bloomingdales. Due to the success of the business in America the brand name was changed to ‘Alan Paine’, this was largely down to the Americans having difficulty pronouncing ‘Godalming’! This new brand name soon became synonymous with quality and style throughout the USA and Europe.
Fast forward to 2009 and the brand introduced its Country Collection; an extensive range of stylish classic and contemporary coats, jackets, waistcoats and accessories for men and women. To this day the company still holds the same traditional values and continues to utilise British design skills. They are committed to the original philosophy and high standards of excellence set all those years ago.
We at Philip Morris and Son began stocking Alan Paine in 2015 and it has exceeded all of our expectations. We initally started with a few tweed items and a couple of sweaters, but soon expanded to include a much wider range. Our customers love the great range on offer and often comment on the quality of the garments they are getting for the price. Our customers want stylish, functional products that look and feel quality. What's more is that they want affordable prices. The Alan Paine collection certainly fits the bill for all of these criteria. The range has expanded every year and now includes accessories and knitwear as well as tweed and other shooting coats. We fully expect the range to keep growing and for the brand to become a real 'big player' in the country market.
