Barbour FAQ

What’s the difference between the types of waxed cotton?

  • Sylkoil wax cotton 6oz is the most traditional waxed cotton. It is an unshorn wax where the cotton comes straight from the loom and is then dyed and waxed. The fabric may feature natural imperfections which enhance the finish over time.
  • Thornproof wax cotton 6oz has a lustrous and even wax. The cotton is pressed between rollers to give a smooth finish with slight sheen. This makes the material very robust.
  • Oban wax cotton 8oz is passed slowly though emery rollers to provide a fine and soft suede-like finish prior to waxing. This results in a luxurious, peach finish and is Barbour’s most robust and hardwearing wax cotton.
  • Lightweight wax cotton 4oz weighs 30% less than the traditional waxes. It has excellent wax retention so needs rewaxing less often. It is perfect for the warmer seasons.
  • Drywax wax cotton 4oz contains less oil and needs rewaxing less often. The wax may need to be warmed to redistribute after wearing in the rain.
